Private Yoga Therapy / Therapeutic Yoga

I like to tell students, "Whatever your issue is, there's a yoga app for that!" That's because yoga is designed to address the whole person -- body, mind and spirit.

I also know that Yoga Classes and Private Yoga Sessions are good for you, but Yoga Therapy is something beyond.

Unlike western medicine, the goal of Yoga Therapy is to eventually empower you to take charge of your health ... by giving you the yoga tools you need to naturally stay in "balance" (the yogi's word for ultimate health).

Students often come to me after they have tried the western approach to healing, or after they exhausted their insurance-paid physical therapy sessions. And they leave, relieved and hopeful.

Training and Experience: I was first certified as a Yoga Therapist in 2007 via Joseph LePage's Integrative Yoga Therapy Program. In   , i was certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Over the years, I have provided Private Yoga Therapy sessions for several hundred clients addressing a range of concerns, including:

  • Back, shoulder, neck, jaw & headache pain
  • Sciatica & Scoliosis
  • Arthritis
  • Inflexibility / DISH Disease
  • Pelvic strength / organ prolapse
  • Knee and hip strength/mobility
  • Poor breathing & posture
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Injury & cancer recovery
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome

From a student: " Luann, there are not enough words to express what you, your wisdom, and Dream have given me over at least 17 years. Beginning with the first time I walked into your studio between classes. I told you my injured rotator cuff would not get better. With that, you had me lie down and go into pre-headstand pose and the tension in my shoulder simply evaporated. Since then, you have seen me through deep knee pain and most importantly a 2013 concussion and facial injuries as the result of a taxi hitting me in a crosswalk. I recall vividly your prescription for meditation and chair yoga as I was confined to bed for a month as my facial bones quietly knit back together. Please know that, whenever I have lost focus, your classes and private lessons have powerfully re-centered me. You are a great gift." -- Cathy S.

Fee: $145/ 90 minutes

The Five Tibetans - The 'Rites of Rejuvenation'

The Five Tibetans are known as the ancient "Rites of Rejuvenation" or the "Fountain of Youth." In  less than 20 minutes a day, the Tibetans will strengthen, energize and  balance you. You’ll feel healthier, more alive!

The Tibetans are known  to enhance bone mass, eliminate double chins, boost memory and immunity, improve  posture/spinal health,  and more.  It has been said that, "The 5 Tibetans are like having a double shot of espresso without the negative side effects!"

The 5 Tibetans are so powerful, I believe (based on my own experience and with students) that it's essential to have a Guide to help you avoid any potential injury/ramifications of the practice. The Tibetans can be physically strenuous, but I give lots of modifications to help you embrace the practice at your own pace. The practice is also detoxifying (unblocking stagnant energy), and I coach you on watching for particular signs that indicate you might need to take this transformative practice at a slower pace.

You can schedule a Private Introductory Session or a session to help you fine-tune an existing practice.

  • In my Introductory Session (2 hours), you'll learn essential warm-ups for the practice, and  how to perform each Tibetan with proper alignment and breathing (based on what is possible for you physically). You’ll also receive lots of handouts to  aid your home practice of the Tibetans.
  • Follow-Up Sessions can focus on movement and breathwork refinement, the Chakra energy centers/organs that are effected, a supportive diet,  and/or any practice questions you might have.

My Experience: I have taught hundreds of students The Five Tibetans privately and in workshops since 2003. Of the many practices I have shared with students over these years, this is one of the key practices they say they continue to do because they can FEEL its positive impact in their lives. They, "Love it!"

Fee: $210 / Introductory Session with Handouts;  $95/hour thereafter

Yoga Nidra Guided 'Sleep' Meditation & Relaxation

Anyone can do this meditation - one of the truly untapped treasures of the yogic tradition! All you have to do is lie down and let the teacher's soothing voice  guide you systematically through increasingly deep levels of physical  relaxation. While the mind remains conscious, the levels of relaxation  and healing achievable during this practice are deeper than regular  sleep. If you want, the session can begin with some with gentle yoga  stretches to warm and relax the body.

A REGULAR YOGA NIDRA PRACTICE is proven to: • Alleviate stress, anxiety,  insomnia & depression   • Awaken a sense of wonder & creativity  • Improve digestion • Calm the nervous system & activate the body’s  natural healing state • Promote mental clarity & peace of mind  •  Ease muscular tension and pain • Improve skin • Lower blood pressure  •  Transform negative beliefs into a more positive outlook. Yoga Nidra has been shown to be the best meditation for service members and others with PTSD.

A Private Session can be guided virtually in your home, at Luann's Private Studio in Ashburn, and even in your hospital bed.

Fee: $95/hour. There is a $30 travel fee to bring this practice to you.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) - 'Tapping'

Explore the  potency of EFT!   This evidence-based Technique , developed in the 1970s and '80s, is a powerful, yet  surprisingly simple method in which we use our fingertips to tap on our body's meridian points (mostly on the head and face),  to help us let go of  the emotional  impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. You can tap to reduce the grip of anything that keeps you from being your best self -- anxiety, fear, anger, jealousy, depression, feelings of inadequacy, cravings, phobias, for examples. Once you know this technique, you can use it any time and anywhere.

My training and experience. I am not certified in this technique, but have guided it often in my Yoga Therapy Private Sessions ... after which students themselves attest to how quickly their level of anxiety around a current challenge was reduced. The most freeing experience I have personally had with EFT is to help me overcome a public speaking disorder. In the past, just the thought of speaking --even my name in a yoga class or making a point at a casual work luncheon-- would make my heart pound so loudly that I couldn't think. I would get sick and not be able to speak before parent-teacher meetings. I certainly never thought I could be a yoga teacher.

“I  like to think of it as a blend of modern psychology and acupressure  points to lower stress and help with issues like anxiety, mood and even  pain... It's a nice blend of connecting the mind and  body to help calm stress.” --Dr. Melissa Young

Fee: $95/hour or Sliding Scale fee based on ability to pay

Tapping the Wisdom of Your Dreams (Dream Interpretation)

We are given visions each night of how we might live in  a more healthy, spiritual, authentic, happier and fulfilling way. Dream  Interpretation (individually one-on-one and in small groups) helps you  learn to find the meaning in your dreams and use dreams as a valuable  resource to move forward in your personal growth.

I first got interested in dreams when, in college, I had a dream vision of my dad having an accident. It was vivid and felt so real that I called him to see if he was okay. I didn't tell him about the dream; but a few weeks later, my dad had the accident in his truck exactly as I had seen it in my dream.  Since then, I know that our dreams -- ALL DREAMS (as one of my dream teachers insists) come to us in the service of health and wholeness. Even nightmares, which come to yell at us because we didn't pay attention to previous dream messages.

The Talmud states, “An uninterpreted dream is like an unread letter.”  Why would you not open the letter?!!

In a Private Dream Interpretation session ... you can explore the multi-layers of your dreams to help you discover  their often hidden messages. You'll receive help in remembering your  dreams and identifying your personal dream symbols, so you can better  understand what your dreams mean. Working with your dreams can be  freeing and empowering. You'll laugh, maybe cry, tap into your creative  energy, and feel supported and encouraged as Luann helps you  learn how to use the wisdom of your dreams to transform your life.

My Dream Interpretation Training / Experience. I received Dream  Interpretation training in The Haden Institute’s 2-year Dream  Interpretation Group Leader Certification program from 2000-2002. This training included my working personally with my dreams with a Jungian Psychologist. Since then, I've led Dream Interpretation groups and "Tapping the Wisdom of Your Dreams" mini-seminars and private sessions, helping many to  benefit from their dreams.  My personal work with Dreams incubated the vision of founding Dream Yoga  Studio, and inspired the studio's name.  Currently, I am especially interesting in hearing of the dreams and visions of the dying.

"Dreams  are our truest friends: They entertain us, they encourage us, they  educate us, they soothe us, and most importantly, they free us." – Bill Beham,  American Entrepreneur
For an amazing, community-building experience, consider scheduling me for Group Dream Interpretation Sessions.

Fee: $75/hour or Sliding Scale fee based on ability to pay for Private Session. The fee for Group Dreamwork is based on location and number of dreamers.

End-of-Life Education & Support

My own experiences with the death of loved ones and my work as a Hospice Volunteer/Death Doula make one thing very clear: Most of us are not prepared for our own death or deaths of others.

We fear death and don't want to talk about it. Yet talking about it and planning for it is the only way to have a "good death" -- not just for us, but for those who will care for us and witness how we manage this second most important event in our life.

"Avoiding or ignoring feelings, fears and conversations about death and dying, sadly, also leads to avoiding or ignoring important connections, so needed at the end of life." – Patty Burgess, Doing Death Differently - My Doula Trainer

Dying or caring for someone who is... can be scary, confusing and exhausting. As a Doula, it is my honor to provide non-medical practical, emotional and spiritual support for this most sacred passage. We will work as a team to figure out what is best for you or your loved one.

And you might be surprised: Talking about and planning for death can be liberating, satisfying and even fun. It's certainly empowering, as you take charge of life now and going forward.

Planning for a "good death" goes way beyond getting the "paperwork" done (wills, trusts, DNRs, a cemetery plot, etc.). While I certainly can encourage your taking care of these things, this is not my key focus as an End-of-Life Doula -- helping you focus on what's really important to you now ... so you have no regrets when your time comes.

Specific services include:

  • Guide a Meditation on Death that helps you get clear about what you value the most. This is virtually guaranteed to inspire you to live life differently, based on greater clarity about what's really important.
  • Guide early or proactive planning for end-of-life wishes, based on your values and beliefs. Think:
  • Discuss care options, including assisted living, hospice or palliative care.
  • Provide companionship, a comforting presence, dignity and guidance to those on their final journey and their loved ones … with the ultimate goal of facilitating an easier, more meaningful end-of-life.
  • Advocate for your needs with medical staff and attendants, your nursing home or assisted living home, and Hospice Team.
  • Educate family members and friends about the dying process and support them in their role.
  • Provide “Respite” for caregivers who are exhausted or need time to take care of other obligations.
  • Help create a supportive environment for the patient – how it looks, feels and sounds.
  • Guide Therapeutic Yoga & Yoga Nidra/Sleep and Letting Go/Transitioning Meditations.
  • Support the spiritual practices and rituals of all involved.
  • Help the dying person in leaving a lasting legacy – assisting in making sure the individual’s memories or wishes are preserved for posterity by helping to write letters, transcribe memories into a journal or book, create a scrapbook, articulate heartfelt messages. Think: What do you want your loved ones and the world to remember about you?

Related Training: CEOLS ( Certified End-of-Life Specialist) in 2021 by the Teaching Transitions/Doing Death Differently program. Trained by Capital Caring Health as a Hospice Volunteer, including special training for holding "Vigil" (when a patient is days to hours before death).  Plus my training/work as a yoga teacher and therapist.

Fee: $85/hour or Sliding Scale fee based on ability to pay, or when more extended hours of assistance is needed.

All services are available in-person or online.
