My Journey

In my search for a deeper connection with that which most of us cannot see, and my life's purpose ... I have traveled to Nepal, Tibet, India, Peru, various ashrams and elsewhere. What I have learned through the wisdom traditions, my teachers, studies and practice, and from my students and Hospice patients, is that everything we need to know ...everything that is really important ... is dwelling in our hearts. We just have to look within --without judgement, striving or aversion-- and we'll touch the divine in ourselves and in one and all.

Om Mani Padme Hum ...May the jewel of the lotus (God) reside in our hearts.

Personal Stuff

When I was 17 years old, about to graduate early from Furr High School in Houston, Texas, my stepmom asked me, "What are you going to do?" I said: "I don't know.... All I know is that I feel like I am energy... and (as i waved my arms in forward moving circles) I must go forward like this... because there will be people, other souls, following me."

Back then, I knew nothing about energy work, yoga, yoga therapy, meditation, reiki, sound therapy, chakras, auras, the significance of dreams, premonitions, synchronicities, how we're all connected, or much of anything else! Which was probably a good thing!

As the masters tell us -- To learn, we must have an empty cup. We must be willing to rest in the "not knowing."

In 1975, at the University of Houston while pursuing a journalism degree, I was introduced to Transcendental Meditation (TM) – a mantra-based practice that I continue to this day. I also had my first out-of-body experience and first dream premonition, both of which left little doubt in my mind that there is much more to us than the physical.

Of course, like most of us who don’t have the luxury of living in a cave, I had to be real. Get jobs, more education, get married, went to church, have my beautiful daughter, moved here and there, ran my own P.R. company … did life … during which I did my best to continue my “nontraditional” studies.

In the ‘90s, I began chanting the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi – “Lord make me an instrument of your peace” –and that led me to reading Tony Schwartz’s book, What Really Matters: Searching for Wisdom in America. My key takeaway was: You can do all the psychedelic drugs you want, but what really supports enlightenment is associating with like-minded seekers.

That led to studying dream interpretation and meeting dear souls willing to meet monthly to explore their dream messages. Those meetings and messages led to yoga teacher training and teaching, and establishing Dream Yoga Studio.

Throughout my life quests, I am aware that my earth jobs progressively focused on communications – from mass communication as a journalist and Communication Director for two school districts and two national education associations, to teaching Small Group and Interpersonal Communication at George Mason University, to teaching communication with Self and beyond via Yoga, Meditation, Dream Interpretation, and end-of-life exploration.

I didn’t really plan any of this. I just kept praying to be of service and saying “Yes” to things that didn’t make a lot of sense at the time. Just following that impulse that drives us to take a step this way or that, because it just feels like something you need to do. It’s taking steps while still holding the “not knowing.”

I share this journey, in case it inspires YOU to stop thinking and planning so much. To make time to listen a little more closely to the messages you might hear – in dreams, on your mat or cushion, while sitting in nature or the car, in the shower or sipping an aromatic brandy – that will guide you to embrace a life with even more meaning … even when it’s not comfortable to do so. To be on the lookout for the synchronicities that are always there to affirm and guide you in this awe-inspiring mystery of life.

Keep saying Yes. I’m here to help if you want.
